In order to begin learning to play the drums, you must study how to read the sheet music.  To do this, you should acquaint yourself to the different symbols utilized in indicating elements of the drum set.

The High Hats – these are described as “x” symbol in the sheet music. There are two styles of playing the hi-hats: either by hitting with the drumstick or using your left foot on the pedal attached to the hi-hats.

The Ride Cymbal also uses “x” symbol as a notation. This part is usually played during heavy rock music, and normally done by moderate drum player.

The Snare Drum is the central part and the most valuable part of a drum set. The beat made by the drum to combine with the other musical instruments is made by the snare drum. This part should be given special considerations in learning and should be known by heart.

The bass drum is played synchronously with the snare drum, which turnouts a very desirable beat when the sounds are mixed. The bass drum makes the lowest frequency sound in the drum set. It is played by  hitting the right foot on the drum pedal.

Counting the time must be studied to accurately play the drum beat. You can begin studying the proper timing and counting by practicing in a single drum, while reading the drum notes given by the trainer. The instructor will give you techniques as well as the things to know about the beat.

You think you’re ready for your first recital; it’s time to play the piece that puts all the parts of the drum. Always keep counting out load to guide your beat in playing.
