I am 14 and I just had my first drum lesson yesterday. The place I go to also has a music store connected to it and I saw some zildjian drumsticks with white tips. They were $5.99 is this a good price? I don’t have a drum kit yet but I thought I would get some drumsticks to work on holding my drumsticks properly.

In my opinion PROMARK WILL ALWAYS BE THE BEST. You’re going to find ALOT of differing opinions on this matter, I’m telling you. But I’ve been around for a LONG LONG TIME, and I know my sticks. Let’s say you play a 7a, grab about 5 pairs of 7a and go to a corner of the music store where no one is take a practice pad wth you. Do not roll sticks on display glass, it is NOT EVEN. roll them on the floor only unless it is an old wooden floor, THEN you’re stuck with display glass. Only roll sticks on a surface that is COMPLETELY FLAT, LIKE A TILED FLOOR (YOU KNOW THE TILES I’m talking about, like in a junior high or high school), basically, a COMPLETELY FLAT FLOOR. Take ALL the sticks out. Look at them all. Look at the difference in color, look at the difference in texture. Feel the WEIGHT, THE WEIGHT IS THE MOST IMPORTANT THING (both sticks need to weigh exactly the same), but the reason you are rolling them is to pick out the STRAIGHTEST STICKS, this is also one of the most important things. Then roll them on the ground. You’ll be able to tell IMMEDIATLEY WHICH ONES ARE BAD AND SHOULD BE “TOSSED”. Package them immediately back up in the original stick sleeves once you get 4, 5, or 6 straight ones, keep playing until you get JUST TWO THAT WEIGH THE SAME. That’s your pair. Put them in a sleeve and put it aside, maybe tear the cardboard on the sleeve just a little bit (or mark it with a pen that you have in your pocket so you don’t mix that pair with another “bad” pair) so you don’t get them mixed up while you’re packaging up the rest of the “LOSERS”, GOT IT? Now go buy your winning pair. Next, maybe you want to buy a pair of 5a’s at the same store. Use the same procedure, but only do this ONCE A MONTH PER STORE, or you’re going to wind up buying warped sticks eventually. You can always go to another store to rifle through their sticks, you see? Now you see how it works, my man. Good luck out there, it is a very competitive world and you won’t know if you are professional material for about 8 to 10 years. You’ll feel it in your heart before you can put the sticks to the drums the right way though. Once you feel it in your heart, it’s only a matter of time until the sticks just GO WHERE THEY ARE SUPPOSED TO. -john in rock island, illinois
goto youtube and watch some of the carter beauford videos (under the table and drumming series). That’ll give you a feel for what it’s like to REALLY HAVE A FEEL FOR THE DRUMS. Drummers like Beauford don’t even have to think about what they are doing because it happens automatically. You should’ve started earlier, you’re starting a little late, but that’s ok, No worries, I haven’t played for 5 years, and I played every DAY FOR 15 YEARS BEFORE THAT, so that puts me at a deficit of 5 year, but I’ll get it back, I know I will, because it’s in my HEART. That’s where it ALL COMES FROM. We used to have this kid in high school and he drummed like a ROBOT, no feel, no groove, and DIDN’T HAVE IT, MAN. He just didn’t have it. You’ve got to be able to MOVE WITH the music, but don’t expect it t happen overnight, just take it slow, REAL SLOW, LEARN THE BASICS, AND DREAM. Oh another thing, print out this email that I sent you and take it your your Instructor. Ask him if I’m right. Ask him if my advice should be followed. See what he says. Then you’ll know for sure we’re all on the right track. keep it up little man…. – johndeporter@yahoo.com
ps – if you send me a mailing address I’ll send you RUSH IN RIO. I don’t know how much these modern day teachers are pushing RUSH on kids these days, so maybe it’s a little early. Ask you teacher for advice.
