It depends on what you are wanting and how long you plan to have your kit. You can definitely get a lot more kit for your money used than you can brand new. I don't think you'll regret going this way provided you have someone help you find the kit with you. Perhaps your music teacher. Short of that, there are some amazing deals on new kits right now. A few brands to consider are the Pacific Drums series by DW, Mapex or some of the Yamaha lines. Don't buy the cheapest kit you can find or the cheapest cymbals.
Also, go to www.drummercafe.com and register to get on the forum. There are tons of useful threads about beginners and entry/mid-level kits and gear. Also, Tigerbill.com has a good forum section.

Some things to look for are what type of wood is used in the shell.
The cheaper kits will have cheaper wood where as the better kits tend to be made from solid Maple or Birch.
Hardware is important as well. Cheap, unknown kits tend to have flimsy hardware. Pearl is know for solid hardware and the Pacific 9000 series is solid as well.
Hope this helps and stick with it!

A basic drum set, maybe used, can go for $200. Check out those papers ("Giant Nickel", "Penny Savers") that you find at supermarkets with the free ads. Sometimes people sell their drum sets for a decent price. If you plan on getting it new, expect to pay some high prices.

But expect to pay anywhere between $200 and $500. It pays to look around too, rather than jump on the first bargain you see.

Have fun on the traps.

DO NOT get a used kit. You will definitely regret it. You are looking at spending anywhere between $500-$2000 for a complete kit. Here is a link to where you should get it from, don't get a beginner's set, you will want a Pearl kit in no time at all. Yamaha drum kits suck, you want a Pearl, trust me.
