well how did you get taught? did you have lessons? if so then teach them how you were tauught, if you play by ear , then just give them pointers as to listen to music and pick out the beats, or start them off by showing them a few easy beats like 2-1 3-1 etc, and a little highhat work and a few drum rolls and stuff. but they have to have a natural ability.

Being a good player and being a good teacher don’t always go hand in hand. If you expect people to pay you to teach them, you need to do some work yourself to become a good teacher. You can pick up a beginners DVD or book to get some ideas on how to teach a beginner. I would start with basic counting, 1/4 notes, 1/8 notes and 1/16 notes. Teach them how to verbalize each note (1 e & ah for 1/16 notes etc.) Then teach them how to apply these 3 notes to the drum set by having them play 1/4 notes on the snare and probably 1/8 notes on the hi-hat and bass since they won’t be ready for 1/16 notes just yet. You could play some different beats using 1/4, 1/8 and 1/16 notes on hi-hat and bass, etc though just to show them what it sounds like. Once they understand basic counting and how to play a basic 4/4 beat you could start with sticking techniques like rudiments. After rudiments teach them how to apply these rudiments into drum fills. After that there are odd time beats, ghost strokes, linear beats and so on. Just use your imagination. Oh, don’t forget to teach them triplet beats also once they understand the 1/4, 1/8 and 1/16th’s. After that just have them pick out a song they want to learn and teach it to them. You could eat up weeks of lessons just helping them perfect one song, but keep it simple like AC/DC or something similar. Don’t overwhelm them in the beginning.
