Beginner Drum Learning Question for Drum Expert?

Hi, I have question for drum expert, or whoever likes to play drum.

I decide to start play drum few weeks ago, and have taken 3 lesson already. My instructor suggests me practice on the pad, and don’t purchase any set until later I develop some skill. I respect my instructor, and totally understand the meaning of it.

However, when I practice on the pad, I am not satisfy with it, because it is hard to get used to the foot without the drum pedal. Also, there’s no sound.

Personally, I know that to play drum it is important to practice the hitting and the muscle movement. To me, what motivates me to play is the sound of the drum, without it, there’s not much satisfaction while I practice with my pad.

In addition, I live in an apartment, and thinking to get a electronic set to practice, so I can have some sounds while I practice. By the way, I do love acoustic drum set, the sound and the feeling are fantastic. My question is, is it appropriate to practice on electronic set as beginner?

Hey bro…the most important thing for your is that your practice. I just think your instructor is probably, 1. trying to simplify it for you before you go out and purchase a drum/set/etc.,
    2. Prob. seen alot of people lose interest, and are stuck with an expensive instrument.
    3. You gotta crawl before you can walk.

I also think your instructor would be very happy with your practicing on an actual drum, because you are actuallly practicing. If you think you will be motivated better with an actual drum, and if you can afford it, and if you are really serious….go for it. But a drum set, whatever, and go man go. Your teacher will, I am sure, be happy that your are interested, and are practiciing.

    Rock on dude!!

apparently its not because it will mess up how you play because electric kits feel different. and don’t worry about the neighbours, if u really have to quiet down just use practise pads.

ok man, i was in your position a while back when i was just starting out. I started with a pad, yes, and was sick of not hearing it. SO. my parents bought me a real snare drum. You know the real thing. Some you can find at any music store and used are the best to start with. So if you want the play the drum kit, then i would recommend getting an electric set, although that dude in the other answer is kind of right by saying that it might mess you up. Maybe you should start with a snare, sell that after you master that, and then buy a cheap full drum set.

I personally don’t like the sound of electronic drumsets… however, there are drumset-pads, that is to say, full drumsets, of drum-pads, even with the pedal, and soundless cymbals tha tmight be a good purchase, and are usually around 200 dollars. (as opposed to the multi-thousands you’ll spend on a tolerable electronic kit)
