    @thnk4urself really? personally, i’ve always admired portnoy for his beats and fills that go PERFECTLY with the music, in my opinion of course. as far as compositions go, showing off is the last thing that comes to my mind concerning his work. none of the band members show off in their writing. what they do is what they feel serves their music and not their own egos i think.

  4. thnk4urself says:

    @Aensgard yea i guess I was wrong. Petrucci doesn’t really show off too much. I just meant they show off by playing incredible stuff constantly but petrucci also crafts some good tunes and the same goes for myung. I just see them as the band that went to berklee & shows it but Mike definetly shows off in the most literal sense. they’re an amazing band but Portnoys antics on stage can get lame sometimes.

    @thnk4urself
    I agree with you with the fact that Portnoy is overrated, but I don’t agree with what you said about DT, I think the only one who shows off there is Mike Portnoy

  6. Aheadstix85 says:

    Portnoy sux!, christie is the man!.

  7. thnk4urself says:

    yea you’re right, it shouldn’t always be about that. I tend to get like that when it comes to something I think is overated. Like Nirvanna or Peyton Manning. Portnoys awesome and has been an influence on my style & I didn’t realize how many people actually know Christy so I wanted to point out that I think what he plays is more difficult and unique but especially in this setting, it’s not about that at all.

  8. mkicon says:

    @thnk4urself Why does it have to be about that though. They are both amazing, and clearly aren’t competing in any hostile way.

  9. thnk4urself says:

    Christy is way better than Portnoy. Just bcuz Portnoy went to Berkley & is more well known doesn’t mean shit. I play drums & I’ve learned a ton of both drummers stuff & trust me, the shit Christy plays is much much harder & also fits the music better. Portnoy’s whole band is just people showing off yet he still doesn’t fit in some of the time. Portnoy’s great to learn from but at a certain point you realize how overrated he is. Christy blows him out of the water

    I agree. Hear his work on Death’s last album. Out of this world!

  14. Insectamongus says:

    this was a really big moment for christy! portnoy is one of his favourite drummers. He says that he was really nervous, so it’s good to see that he doesn’t look nervous at all

  15. Insectamongus says:

    I wonder how it would b if christy sat on portnoys side and played the 26″ bassdrum and tried to do all that stuff. this video it feels like Christy is more tricks and licks here. I think portnoy is more intresting to listen to here. Although I don’t think portnoy can do “scavenger of human sorrow” the way christy does it!

  16. lmhotep says:

    Portnoy is good, but come on, Christy is better

  17. ter50 says:

    @teamgod He has a great talent obviously but so many people consider him the best metal drummer today and you found always him on every drummer magazine cover. However during the years I discovered so many drummers better than him, examples are Bobby Jarzombek, awesome double bass technique, and Thomas Haake, his changes of tempo are incredible.

  18. teamgod says:

    @ter50

    Well I have to disagree with the overrated part. I do believe he’s one of the best rock/prog metal drummers today and he has definitely shown that he has the chops to play insanely technical patterns with a lot of precision. I do agree with your double-bass remark though.

  19. tideal says:

    OMG! Awesome!

  20. overcontrol says:

    Nick Barker Much Better Yeah fuck

  21. dissected133 says:

    no doubt in my mind…. richard christy is mike portnoy x10

  22. ter50 says:

    @neron507 Of course! Mike is overrated and his double bass technique isn’t so unbelievable like many think.

  23. neron507 says:

    Richard ownd portnoy lol

  24. kingdiamondking says:

  25. JaundiceJaun says:
